Two Each for Mexico and Canada
and Hat-Tricks for Arturo, Neha and Laura ...
Mexico's Arturo Salazar captured his third successive Scottish Junior
Open title when he beat his twin brother in straight games in the U19 final
at the National Squash Centre in Edinburgh. The pair had contested the
previous two Scottish U17 finals, and Arturo today maintained his dominance
to add another to his long list of junior titles.
While
it took Arturo two years to complete his Scottish hat-trick, Canada's
Neha Kumar collected her third title inside a month as she beat
England's Victoria Lust in four games to add the Scottish title to the
Canadian and US Open titles that were already hers.
There was disappointment for home supporters as Scotland's Ian Jubb lost out
in the U17 final, unseeded Gabriel Velasquez keeping the title in
Mexican hands. Canada claimed a second title as Laura Gemmell
emulated Kumar's feat as she too added the Scottish to her Canadian and US
Under 15 titles.
The remaining titles were shared between England, Ireland, India and Hong
Kong, as many of the competitors now head South to Sheffield for next week's
British Junior Open.

The Salazars ... part one |
29-Dec, Semi-Finals:
All-Mexican final in Edinburgh,
Kumar goes for the hat-trick ...
A Mexican winner is guaranteed in
the Boys U19 section of the Scottish Junior Open as twins Arturo and
Cesar Salazar both beat Canadian opponents in the semi-finals at the
National Squash Centre at Heriot-Watt University. Arturo beat top seed David
Glass in straight games, while Cesar took 75 minutes to overcome Andrew
McDougall in four games. The pair are obviously no strangers, and met in the
U17 final here in 2004 and 2003. The
Salazars
Home interest was maintained in the Boys U15 as second seed Ian Jubb
won through to the final with a straight games win over England's Alex
Bowden, where he will faces an unseeded Mexican Gabriel Velaquez.
The
Boys U17 is the only event where the top two seeds have made the final, with
Ireland's Rory Byrne taking on Canadian David Letourneau.
Scotland's other semi-finalist Alexandra Clark bowed out to England's
Victoria Lust in the Girls U19 event. Lust faces Canada's Neha Kumar,
winner of the Canadian and US Open titles already this month, in the final.
India is also guaranteed a title, with all four semi-finalists in the Girls
U13 representing the subcontinent, and the team will be hoping that
Abhishek Pradhan in the Boys U13 and Surbhi Misra in the Girls
U17 will be able to add to their tally tomorrow. |

Ferguson and Jubb on
course in Edinburgh ...
Elspeth Burnside reports
Heriot Watt's Alex Martin, the No.2 seed, recovered from
dropping the first game to beat Wales' Gemma Davies in the under-19
quarter-finals of the Jury's Inn Scottish Junior Open Championship at the
Heriot-Watt National Squash Centre in Edinburgh.
The London-based Scot won 2-9 10-8 9-2 9-3 to earn a semi-final match
against England's Victoria Lust.
In
the boys' under-19 championship, Scottish No.1 Greg McArthur, a
recent winner of the Irish Open, raised hopes of a huge upset in the
quarter-finals when he took the opening two games against Canada's No.1 seed
David Glass.
But the Heriot-Watt Academy 18-year-old, who had been suffering from a cold
in the build-up to the championships, couldn't quite sustain the pace and
lost 7-9 1-9 9-4 9-6 9-5.
In
the previous round, Adam Bews, who comes from Orkney but is now based
in Edinburgh and trains at the Heriot-Watt Academy, scored a great 4-9 9-4
9-5 2-9 9-6 win over American No.1 Todd McGuiness. But he also went out to a
Canadian in the quarter-finals, losing 9-5 9-5 9-2 to Andrew McDougall.
Christopher Ferguson (Waverley) and Ian Jubb (Hertiot-Watt),
the top two seeds, stayed on course for a possible all-Scottish clash in the
boys' under-15 final. In the second round, top-seeded Ferguson beat Egypt's
Allaa Abdel Kader 9-0 7-9 9-4 9-1, while Jubb went through 9-3 9-3 9-1
against England's Francis Nelson.
Lyall Paterson (Heriot-Watt) maintained Scottish interest in the
boys' under-17 event with a 9-4 9-6 9-0 victory over Portugal's Benjamin
Matheus. |
