JUNIORS TO JOIN
PRINCE PARTY
Eventis Sports Marketing have once again
demonstrated their innovative approach to event promotion with the
announcement that they will be staging the first ever English Junior Open,
sponsored by Prince Sports UK.
The Prince English Junior Open is the latest in a long line of
‘firsts’ that the company has introduced to the squash world. “Following on
from the first ever squash event at the Crucible Theatre, the inaugural
Prince English Open and a brand new portable court, we are excited to
announce that the junior event will be the first time that the English
Junior Open title is up for grabs” said World no.1, & Eventis director,
Peter Nicol.
The Prince English Junior Open will be run in association with England
squash, and will be split between Sheffield’s two most prominent clubs,
Abbeydale SRC & Hallamshire LT & SC. The tournament will take place from
13-15th August 2003 with matches each day, but finishing in time for the
competitors to get down to the Crucible to watch the PSA world ranking
event.
Nicol’s fellow director Tim Garner explained the thinking behind the new
event. “We saw an opportunity to give the country’s future stars the chance
to play in their own prestigious event, and at the same time enabling them
to see the current stars in action. As a result, we will be limiting the
draw size in each of the events to 16 players (places taking from England
Squash’s rankings).
"This means that we can play a monrad system, guaranteeing each player 4
matches, but still being able to complete proceedings by the start of the
professional tournament.”
“There are two levels of entry fee, the basic one being £15 and a package
for £35 that includes tickets to the first round matches on Wednesday &
Thursday. Both fees include a tournament t-shirt, but we are sure that most
of the competitors will sign up for the tickets option and will relish the
chance to see their heroes in action without the need to travel large
distances to do so.”
England Squash already runs the incredibly successful British Junior Open in
Sheffield, which last year attracted over 500 entries, so the smaller field
for the Prince English Junior Open should ensure a very smoothly run event.
Head of Events at England Squash Chris
Nutley commented, “We are whole heartedly behind this initiative from
Eventis. The junior scene here continues to go from strength to strength and
it is great that they will have another prestigious title to play for. The
fact that the competitors will be able to draw inspiration from the world’s
best playing at the Crucible can only add to the event.”
