Let me tell you something: the ball was still warm when we got the results,
thanks to the love of my life, the sunshine of my days, our
photographer-reporter Patrick Le Fur (only joking, Mrs Le Fur!).
“It was a fantastic match, a FAN-TAS-TIC MATCH!”, shouts Patrick over the
phone.
”The first two games were evenly contested, but Holland's second seed
Laurens Anjema claimed a tight third game 15/13 to set himself up for a
second PSA title within a week”.
Patrick continues: ”But in the fourth Anjema's physical resources, strong
all week, seemed to wilt as Hafiz took total control to win 15/5.
The Dutchman came back fighting in the fifth, but the momentum was with the
Egyptian as stayed ahead during the crucial fifth game.”
But in the commotion, Patrick can’t find the exact score, so … zoom … he
grabs Nicolas Barbeau, the match referee.
“It’s was a great match… and great refereeing too, if you don’t mind me
saying so…” laughs Nicolas. “Now, you can stop giggling stupidly woman”… he
adds, as I’m killing myself laughing.
Yes, a great match indeed, even if at match ball, 14/12, there were eleven
lets, both players trying to get a stroke for interference”.
"It was a gentleman's match” continued Nicolas Barbeau. "A long match, one
hour and 25 minutes. They were both fighting hard, every ball, every rally
was highly disputed, but both were true gentlemen. I honestly think that
squash has benefited from the behaviour of these two remarkable players,
their fair-play attitude, their attacking game that never became
confrontational, always respectful of each other, the referee and the
audience."
Mohamed Hafiz, ranked 68, eventually won the crucial point to crush LJ’s
hopes of his second PSA title in a row. Laurens Anjema will be disappointed
surely. His ranking of 48 placed him in the favourite’s seat. Everybody has
been impressed by his physical abilities, and he certainly wanted to close
this season with another PSA title.
But at the end of the day, the audience is delighted, Chartres is
celebrating the end of a beautiful event, and France has another great and
successful tournament.

No French Final in Chartres
Hopes of an all-French final were dashed when the unseeded French pair of
Stephane Galifi and Julien Balbo both fell at the semi-final stage in
Chartres.
Having battled his way through qualifying, beating the top seed and a hard
quarter-final, Galifi simply didn't have enough left to trouble Hafiz with.
The Egyptian was always in control, playing a solid, conventional game and
took advantage of an error-prone Galifi. The Frenchman's cause was not
helped by being caught in the eye early in the match by his opponent's
trailing shirt - it took him several minutes to recover and affected him
throughout the match. The
second semi-final between Julien Balbo and Laurens Anjema was a much longer
match, with the Frenchman offering strong resistance to the Dutch second
seed. Balbo was eventually overpowered by the physical presence and ball
control of Dutchman, who exerted constant pressure, forcing Balbo into
errors as he moved into the final
In the final
Anjema will be seeking his second PSA title in quick succession, having won
the Dutch Open last week, while Hafiz, in his second final, will be hoping
to claim a maiden PSA title.

French Charge in Chartres ...
Originality seems always to come
from places you wouldn’t expect it!
If you ask any French person where innovation may come from in France, Chartres is
not the first city that comes to mind…
But have a look at the side “wall” of the glass court…
A beautiful tag…
I just love it!
That’s the way to take squash out of the ghetto, and down in the street, to
a younger audience… The squash players, the squash audience of tomorrow..
The compere of the event is Albert Médina, an old friend of mine, who used
to be in charge of the Referees when I was performing (who said, “what, that
long ago”…) who now only sees squash as a hobby, and not a heartache, and
the European Referee present was my “other” boss, Nicolas Barbeau proud owner of the French
Squash Magazine, Planète Squash.
The world of squash is so small, isn’t it…
Caroline Lesmesle, owner of Chartres Squash Club and organiser of the event,
has been praised by everybody in Chartres for her organisational skills, her
attention to detail and her will to make the players’ stay in her city one
of the best memories of their career…
We need more people like Caroline, who dedicate their time to promote
squash. We need them in France. We need them all around the world.
As usual, I have my favourite “spy / reporter / photographer”, otherwise known as
Patrick Le Fur, on site in Chartres.
Yes, I know, between Framboise (for those who still don’t know, it means
raspberry), and Pat The Fur, Squash Player's reporters are up for nicknames,
aren’t they….
Laurens Anjema, LJ for all who know him, is in great form I was told. After
winning his first PSA title in The Hague, in the Netherlands just a few days
ago, helped by the advice of his coach Neil Harvey who had made the trip to
support his player, LJ is now cruising in this tournament, not losing one
game so far, and winning his quarter-final match against Yorkshire-based Alex Stait 15/13,
15/9, 15/14.
Julien Balbo, “le petit qui monte”, meaning, the youngest that is coming up,
was meeting Mad Andy Whipp who had a loooooooooong 5 setter with Bubbly
John Rooney in the previous round, a match that ended 15/13 in the 5th. But as Julien had the same kind of match against Arshad Burki in his previous
round, they started with the same heavy legs! Andy Whipp, as usual, ran a
lot, to the point that he actually lost a shoe on court! Well, that’s what I call
“giving it all, even his shoes…” But maybe the younger recovered just a bit
quicker, and Balbo took the match in 4 15/10, 15/13, 14/17, 15/10.
Jean Michel Arcucci still suffers from his twisted ankle (which prevented him
from performing at his best in Rennes, for the European Team
Championship) but still gave a good run to his opponent, before finally
conceding the match 15/13, 15/9, 15/14 to Mohamed Hafiz.
Not to forget the surprising run of the Frenchman Stéphane Galifi, ranked
269, who first got rid of the event's top seed Jan Koukal, and found himself in
the semis by wining a long 5 setter against Eric Galvez, losing the 4th 16/17, but winning the
5th 15/2.
So tonight, the semis, Galifi/Hafiz and Anjema/Balbo, with the final and
3rd place playoff on Saturday.

UN MATCH DE GENTLEMEN !
Je
peux vous dire un truc… C’est que la balle était encore chaude quand j’ai
eu les résultats.
Mon Patrick Le Fur d’amour que j’aime d’amour
parce-que-sans-lui-pas-de-photos-et-donc-pas-de-reportages, m’annonce les
résultats :
« Mohamed Hafiz, 3/2. On a eu un match fantastique, FAN-TAS-TI-QUE ! Les
deux premiers jeux très équilibrés, puis Laurens prend le 3ème 15/13. Là,
il s’écroule physiquement, et dans le quatrième, il est complètement
absent et perd 15/4 dans le 4ème. Dans le 5ème, il reprend ses esprits et
reprend le combat.
Hafiz, lui, a toujours été égal à lui-même : régulier, droit, convivial,
fair-play, bref un exemple sur le court ! »
Mais j’ai besoin des scores exacts, alors hop, il me trouve Nicolas
Barbeau, l’arbitre de la rencontre, qui m’annonce en riant :
« ça été un grand match… et un grand arbitrage ! Fermez la parenthèse, à
la ligne… »
 « Non », me confirme Nicolas, « un grand match, même si sur la balle de
match, 14/12, 11 lets ont été accordés, chaque joueur recherchant
l’interférence pour tenter d’obtenir un stroke ! »
« C’était un match de Gentlemen, un match long qui a duré une heure et
vingt cinq minutes, un match de très haut niveau, très disputé, avec deux
joueurs qui se sont comportés en vrais gentlemen du squash. Ça a fait
beaucoup de bien au squash de voir des joueurs aussi fair-play, aussi
combatifs, et aussi respectueux l’un de l’autre, et de l’arbitre et du
public. »
 Alors voilà, un autre tournoi PSA terminé, le premier titre pour un
l’Égyptien jouant sous la bannière de Quatar, classé à ce jour 68ème
mondial. LJ, Laurens Anjema, ne pourra s’empêcher d’être déçu. Il est
classé 48ème mondial, il est en grande forme physique, il vient de gagner
un tournoi chez lui, à La Hague, et comptait sans doute bien partir en
vacances avec un deuxième titre sous le bras.
Mais qu’importe, le public est ravi, Chartres est en fête, et la France
compte un tournoi de plus au succès retentissant.

FRANÇAIS EN FINALE
Julien Balbo et Stéphane Galifi se
sont fait éliminer en demi-finale, deux matches bien différents, m’ont
rapporté Patrick Le Fur et Albert Médina.
Stéphane Galifi, un qualifié, avait causé le choc du tournoi en éliminant
le tête de série du tournoi Jan Koukal. Il affrontait l'Égyptien Mohamed
Hafiz, tête de série numéro 7, pour une place en finale.
 Le
match venait à peine de commencer quand la manche du Tee-shirt d’Hafiz
vint percuter l’œil de Galifi. Stéphane a accusé le choc, et a pris trois
minutes pour récupérer. Mais il n’est jamais vraiment entré dans le match,
faisant beaucoup de fautes directes et non provoquées. Mohamed Hafiz a
joué avec grande assurance un jeu conventionnel et sûr, et son remarquable
fair-play fut apprécié de tous.
Il est important de rappeler que Stéphane a fait tous les matches des
qualifications pour arriver au tableau final, qu’il a fait de nombreux
matches en 5 sets, et qu’il a bien souvent fini le dernier, tard dans la
nuit. Alors, il n’est pas surprenant qu’il ait été un peu fatigué….
 Julien
a donné un peu plus de fil à retordre au très en forme Laurens Anjema, LJ,
(en fait il s'appelle Laurens Jan Anjema, d'où son surnom) qui compte bien
ajouter son deuxième tournoi PSA à son tableau de chasse (il a gagné la
semaine dernière à la Hague). LJ contrôlait les échanges et maîtrisait
parfaitement son jeu. Julien a peut-être manqué d’agressivité et de
fluidité dans la balle.
Les sets furent disputés, et le match très distrayant, même si le
Hollandais a finalement gagné en trois sets. « Nous avons vu une très
belle demi-finale », m’a confié Albert Médina, responsable des arbitres et
Mr Loyal du tournoi.
Donc, samedi soir, LJ Anjema contre Mohamed Hafiz. Nous vous ferons
parvenir tous les détails dès que nous les recevrons….
 CHARTRES : UN SUCCÈS
DES PHOTOS, DES PHOTOS, criais-je à
tue-tête. Moi, je voulais voir un court vitré au cœur de la superbe petite
ville de Chartres. Eh bien je n’ai pas été déçue !
Grâce à mon photographe/reporter/espion Patrick Le Fur, je sais
tout ce qui se passe, et je vois tout comment ça se passe…
J’en ai de la chance…
Et
alors, j’adore les tags sur les côtés du court. Quelle bonne idée ! Et
j’avoue que ce n’est pas d’une petite ville de province comme Chartres que
j’attendais ce genre d’innovation.
Comme quoi, je suis ben bête….
Le tournoi est organisé de main de maître, enfin de maîtresse par la
remarquable Caroline Lemesle, présidente du Club de Squash de Chartres.
Elle est aux petits soins pour tous, et en particulier pour les joueurs
bien sûr.
Il devient de plus en plus évident que Chartres va jouer un rôle de plus
en plus important sur le plan français, voire européen. Et des gens comme
Caroline, généreux, investis à 100% dans le squash, il nous en faut de
plus en plus. En France et partout dans le monde…
 Le
tournoi est présenté par notre Albert Médina national (inutile de
vous le présenter, mais au cas où vous ne le connaîtriez pas, Albert était
pendant des années responsable des arbitres à la Fédération), et arbitré
en autres par un arbitre européen français, Mr Nicolas Barbeau, qui n’est
autre que le rédac chef de Planète Squash pour lequel j’ai le plaisir et
l’honneur de travailler.
Mais passons au Squash.
Nous en étions donc aux quarts de finale.
Commençons par le jeune Laurens Anjema, LJ comme on le surnomme. C’est un
jeune joueur dont le papa Robert Jan était un grand joueur de squash en
Hollande qui fut Champion Hollandais à de nombreuses reprises. Depuis
trois ans maintenant, il s’entraîne avec
Neil Harvey à Chinford, au nord de Londres.
Laurens a fait une très bonne saison, et vient de finir en beauté en
gagnant son premier tournoi PSA dans son pays, à La Hague. Ici, à Chartres,
il s’est débarrassé d’Alex Muller et de l’anglais Alex Stait sans perdre
un set. Et moi, j’ai vu Stait jouer il y a 15 jours, croyez-moi, c’est pas
du gâteau…
 Passons
maintenant à Julien Balbo, le petit qui monte, invité au tournoi.
Julien avait rencontré au tour précédent le Pakistanais Arshad Iqbal Burki
dans un match long et difficile, où le pauvre Burki avait du abandonner
dans le 5ème à 3/12 sur crampes.
Julien partait donc avec le désavantage d’avoir joué un marathon la veille.
Mais comme son adversaire, Andy Whipp avait joué lui aussi le même
type de match contre l’adorable joueur Irlandais John Rooney (5 set, gagné
15/13 au dernier) les pendules étaient parfaitement à l’heure !
Le match fut long et acharné. Andy courait partout, comme à son habitude.
Il courait tellement qu’il en a perdu sa chaussure.
Ce qui a fait dire à Patrick Le Fur :
« Encore un anglais à côté de ses pompes… »
Inutile de vous dire que c’est intraduisible…
Enfin bon, est-ce que l’âge de Julien a pesé dans la balance, a-t-il
récupéré plus vite que son adversaire ? C’est possible. Quoi qu’il en soit,
le Français gagne en 4 sets, 15/10, 15/13, 14/17, 15/10.
 Moins
bonne nouvelle en revanche pour notre Jean Michel Arcucci. Cela fait
maintenant plusieurs semaines que Jean-Michel souffre une entorse, et qu’il
ne s’en remet pas. Il s’est bien battu, mais n’a pu que s’incliner face à
Mohamed Hafiz 15/13, 15/9, 15/14.
Et pour finir, la surprise de ce tournoi, Stéphane Galifi, venant des
qualifications, qui a sorti au premier tour le tête de série Jan Koukal au
premier tour 15/8 15/5 15/11, et qui a continué son cavalier seul en
battant le Mexicain Eric Galvez en 5 sets (perdant le 4ème 17/16, mais
gagnant le dernier 15/2).
Les demi-finales se jouent ce soir entre Stéphane Galifi et Mohamed Hafiz
d’une part, et Julien Balbo en Laurens Anjema d’autre part.
Si vous êtes dans les environs, n’hésitez pas à vous déplacer, vous ne
serez pas déçu.
