ADRIAN GRANT:
MOVING BACK HOME
Adrian Grant, world number 17, is so sad. Not only did Joey Barrington, ranked
50, forfeit on the morning of the BSPA Esporta
Open due to an injury, but his main
threat, Mohamed Azlan, ranked 29, from the Neil Harvey Group, in Chingford,
has also dropped out.
Well actually, for him, its a tiny bit more complicated. He was playing
in a another tournament, and was not supposed to be back in time to
participate here at all. So he forfeited. But then, he came back on Friday
morning, and tried to get in the draw again, but it was actually too late. So
the only real threat left on the other side on the draw is the experienced
Peter Genever, from Sussex, ranked 44 in the world.
Shame really, isnt?
The London born player had a pretty good run in the Nationals 2004 back in
February. In the quarters, he beat his friend from the junior years and
English Team mate, Nick Matthew, ranked number 10, who he hadnt defeated for
2 years, only to lose against World number 1 (then number 2) John White in 4
sets and 82 minutes.
Then, the young Grant flew to Pakistan, only to win the COAS International by
disposing in the final of a young player from Pakistan who is making a come
back at 22, Shahid Zaman, now based in Ealing Squash Club and training with Mo
Yasin.
So, overall, a pretty good start to the year for the Londoner. Yes, Londoner,
as although he did spend four years in Halifax, he is now back in Catford,
Kent, and is currently trying to find a place of his own. He probably would
like somewhere near this squash club, as he trained here. So, if you hear of
anything
