27/28 Nov: Qualifying ...
28-Nov, Qualifying Finals:

Day two of the first-ever combined World Open saw 16 players qualify for the main draws. In the men's event half of the matches went the full distance, with Joey Barrington, Simon Parke, Renan Lavigne and Hisham Ashour winning their marathon clashes, and three women - Raneem El Weleily, Suzie Pierrepont and Becky Botwright - also needed the full five games to qualify for tomorrow's first round proper.

Stewart Boswell qualified, as he was sure to do, and plays one, Canadian Graham, Ryding with a view to playing another, Jonathon Power, if the latter beats Ong Beng Hee.

Power will not like what he sees since he came off injured 2-0 down in Qatar against Boswell, and if anybody can resurrect an injury it is the persistent Aussie.

MEN'S DRAW     WOMEN'S DRAW

Day Two Roundup from Alex Wan

Karen Kronemeyer and Suzie Pierrepont caused minor upsets today as they upstaged their higher ranked opponents in contrasting styles. While Pierrepont took nearly an hour to upstage Jackln Hawkes in a rather physical match, Kronemeyer joined Annelize Naude and Vanessa Atkinson, after beating Runa Reta in less than half an hour.

Rebecca Chiu’s hopes of seeing more fellow country women join her in the main draw were dashed when a very tired Christina Mak bowed out to Mexico’s Samantha Teran in straight games. All the other ladies matches went according to seeding – Becky Botwright and world junior champion Raneem El Weleily just scraping through.

In the men’s, Ramy Ashour continued to make his presence felt on the PSA tour when he dumped Dan Jenson out of the competition in just over half an hour. The youngster plays Gaultier tomorrow in what could be a highly interesting match. Elder brother Hisham joins him too after hard fought victory over veteran Rodney Durbach.

As expected, Stewart Boswell qualifies and plays Ryding, with a potential of meeting Jonathan Power in the second round. Power, who looked good in practice today, must be fuming, just as anyone who draws Boswell would.

Tomorrow, the real action begins and everyone will be fighting for a place in the press centre!

27-Nov:
Historic World Open Under Way in Hong Kong ...

The first ever joint men’s and women’s World Open Squash Championships got underway in Hong Kong today with 64 players battling through the first qualifying rounds of the year’s biggest event, sponsored jointly by Cathay Pacific and Credit Suisse Privilege.

Hong Kong’s Christina Mak delighted home crowds when she overturned a two-game deficit to beat Australia’s Lisa Camilleri 1-9 6-9 9-3 9-7 9-3 in 66 minutes to book a place in the women’s qualifying finals against Mexico’s Samantha Teran.

In the men’s event, it took Welshman Alex Gough 80 minutes – the longest match of the day – to overcome Frenchman Jean-Michel Arcucci  to set up a meeting with Italy’s Davide Bianchetti in the qualifying finals.

It was only three days ago in Doha that the pair – both qualifiers - fought out a second round battle in the Qatar Classic, with the 34-year-old Welsh national champion securing a surprise place in the quarter-finals of the PSA Super Series Platinum event.

Action continues at the Hong Kong Squash Centre until the event moves onto the perspex court in Hong Kong's Cultural Centre for the semi-finals and finals.

27-Nov: QUALIFYING ROUND ONE RESULTS

Day One roundup from Alex Wan
Mixed news for locals

The Hong Kong local players, some as young as 16, had the opportunity to somewhat make their “professional debut” in the biggest tournament of them all. All of them made a good account of themselves, particularly the trio of Joey Chan, Leung Shin-Nga and Chiu Ka Kei – all members of the World Women Junior Championships winning team.

Skills wise, the 16 year olds were matching their more illustrious opponents and sometimes even outsmarting them. But physically, the girls were just not ready for the tough conditions and in the end just couldn’t sustain the pace and intensity. Joey Chan in particular, very often sent Becky Botwright in all corners of the court.

One of the best matches of the day had to be the Bianchetti vs Manning match, with the lanky Italian eventually winning after an hour in court. Both players were very pumped up and were seen shouting “come on” to themselves in the fashion of Lleyton Hewitt on the tennis courts. It will be even more interesting today as Bianchetti’s opponent is Welshman Alex Gough, who had an even more competitive battle with Jean Michel Arcuci in a match that lasted 80 minutes.

In the ladies, Hong Kong’s Christina Mak came back from 2 games down to oust Australian Lisa Cameilleri and will face qualifying top seed Samantha Teran for a place in the main draw. The only upset of the day saw Manuella Manetta fall to virtually unknown Eun Ok Park of Korea in 5 games.
